Review: Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tann

Daughter of the Moon Goddess Review

Daughter of the Moon Goddess is a remarkable debut and a lush, magical read.

This book is inspired by the legend of Chang’e, the Chinese moon goddess. Chang’e has lived in exile since she took the immortal elixir meant for her husband. In her isolated palace, she hides the existence of her daughter, Xingyin. When Xingyin’s presence is almost discovered, Chang’e decides to send her away to keep her safe. Xingyin is alone and powerless, but she’s determined to set her mother free. When an opportunity arises to train alongside the Celestial Emperor’s son, she seizes it – even it means entering her enemies household.

With gorgeous writing and a setting steeped in legend and magic, Daughter of the Moon Goddess was a delightful read. Xingyin is a loveable character who undertakes exciting quests filled with mythical creatures like dragons and mermaids. The world felt so vibrant and alive. This is a coming-of-age story about a girl who is torn between the people she loves, and a world in turmoil. The love triangle trope features, but in a refreshingly fun way. Both love interests were well developed, and the relationships had twists and turns that made it difficult to choose a favourite. Although the story can be predictable at times, it was thoroughly enjoyable and riveting – a recommended read to mythology and fantasy lovers.

Thanks to Harper Collins Uk and Netgalley for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

  1. Great review! Sounds like it’s very beautifully written and I’m intrigued by the premise but the love triangle really has me hesitating cos I *do not* like that trope at all 😂 Still tempted though!
