10 Best Backlist Books I Read This Year

There’s often a focus on brand new books when talking about the best books of the year, so I wanted to chat about books I loved that were released before 2021. New releases aren’t the only books worth recommending and hyping up! Here are my ten best backlist books of the year.

Into The Drowning Deep by Mira Grant

When scientific curiosity goes too far these scientists on the search for mermaids might find themselves fighting for their lives. Mira Grant (better known as Seanan McGuire) expertly wields a large, diverse cast of characters in this riveting ocean horror.

The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling

This book reminded me how fucked up caves are. Mixing sci-fi and horror elements to create a claustrophobic read filled with paranoia, isolation, and big worms, this one’s a must-read for lovers of slow-paced, atmospheric horror.

The First Sister by Linden A. Lewis

This ongoing series is a fantastic space opera with plot twists that are equal parts mindblowing and heartbreaking. It has a specific focus on human experimentation, autonomy, and power.

Harrow The Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

This series barely needs an introduction. Harrow the Ninth is one of the strangest books ever to exist, and it’s absolutely brilliant. If you’re here for not knowing what’s going on, but vibing with some good goth shit, this is the book for you.

Network Effect by Martha Wells

Murderbot is one of the best characters you’ll ever encounter. This full-length novel filled with even more action, sarcasm, and Murderbot having An Emotion is fantastic.

Adult Sci-Fi

Murderbot returns in its highly-anticipated, first, full-length standalone novel.

You know that feeling when you’re at work, and you’ve had enough of people, and then the boss walks in with yet another job that needs to be done right this second or the world will end, but all you want to do is go home and binge your favorite shows? And you’re a sentient murder machine programmed for destruction? Congratulations, you’re Murderbot.

Come for the pew-pew space battles, stay for the most relatable A.I. you’ll read this century.

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

This one’s a Russian-inspired fantasy with a gorgeous wintery setting. The writing is sublime and the examination of the rise of Christianity and the suppression of folk religions is especially interesting.

Adult Historical Fantasy

At the edge of the Russian wilderness, winter lasts most of the year and the snowdrifts grow taller than houses. The Bear and the Nightingale is a magical debut novel from a gifted and gorgeous voice. It spins an irresistible spell as it announces the arrival of a singular talent.

The Outside by Ada Hoffmann

With a cast filled with disabled characters, cosmic horror mixed with sci-fi, and wonderfully original worldbuilding, The Outside is a criminally underrated book that I’ll be shouting about for a long time to come.

This chunky book is perfect for epic fantasy fans who want a world filled with rich history, a battle against evil, and character’s you can’t easily forget.

The Sound Of A Wild-Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey

This quiet read is part memoir about chronic illness, part book about snails. When the author’s illness makes her bedridden, she’s gifted a garden snail which soon becomes an important part of her everyday life

Adult Non-Fiction
